With decades of experience

My mother was born in Almaty, Kazakhstan in 1926. My mother was born in Almaty, Kazakhstan in 1926.

She died when my daughter was just three years old and there are days when I feel that loss more than others. Mother’s Day tends to be one of them.

And yet she is still very present. In the way I think, in the things I value, in the woman I have tried to be. That doesn’t go away.

In a few weeks my daughter and I are travelling to Kazakhstan together. I am looking forward to it so very much. She planted the seed for this trip ♥️.

We will hike in the Tien Shan mountains, spend time at Big Almaty Lake ... both were my mother’s favourite places. In preparation for our trip, Ella is learning Russian and I can only imagine how happy and proud that would have made my mama.

Happy Mother’s Day to every woman holding someone close today, and to those holding memories instead.

Accessories don’t lie ... Humans have been adorni Accessories don’t lie ...

Humans have been adorning themselves for over 100,000 years. Not for warmth or protection... although some pieces can be lethal. 😉
But for status, identity and the very human desire to say something about who we are without opening our mouths.

The earliest jewellery was made from shells, bones and feathers.
Then came gold, gemstones and silk scarves.
Nothing has really changed.
We are still doing exactly what our ancestors did. Telling our story through the things we choose to wear.

My accessories do two things ...
They complement what I’m wearing and they reflect how I’m feeling.
Subtle on the quieter days.
Bold when I’m feeling... well, bold.

Today was clearly a bold day and perhaps a little flirtatious

I took the long way home today. Not because I had I took the long way home today. Not because I had to.

Simply because I liked what I was wearing. And yes … that is a perfectly good reason.

What you wear does change something.

You walk a little differently. You slow down. You take your time.

Nothing dramatic. Just enough to notice it.

We don’t always need an occasion to enjoy what we wear.

Sometimes the occasion is just … the day itself.

No one tells you this ... Most skincare advice sim No one tells you this ... Most skincare advice simply wasn’t designed for maturing skin.

For years I did what most of us do. Added more, tried more, expected more.
Serums, vitamin A, vitamin C, peptides, balms, oils, creams... bottles started to accumulate and I went into complete overwhelm. And so did my skin.

Phew. The last thing I needed as a mature woman was more overwhelm.

The shift didn’t come from finding the right product. It came from stepping back entirely. Going back to basics. Cleanse and moisturise. That’s it.

Then, slowly, I added one serum. A well researched formula with a thoughtful combination of active ingredients from a brand that had actually done its homework. Nothing more.

Now my routine is three steps. Cleanse, serum, moisturise. My skin feels calmer, less reactive, more itself.
And that, in my experience, is when skin starts to look its best. Not because you’ve done more. Because you’ve finally stopped overdoing it.

💕 I’ll share the serums that have actually worked for me in the comments. 💕

The best part of travelling alone? No one is waiti The best part of travelling alone? No one is waiting for you ...

And I mean that in the best possible way.

No negotiating plans, no adjusting your pace, no asking “what do you feel like doing?”
You wake up and the day is entirely yours.
There are moments, of course, when you wish someone were there. A spectacular view, a crazy moment in a market, a particularly delicious glass of wine... you feel that little twinge of wanting to share it. But it passes. Quickly, actually.

What stays is something else entirely. The quiet liberation of raising yourself to every challenge, making every decision, finding your way through every unfamiliar moment alone. That particular buzz lingers long after you’ve come home.

Solo travel isn’t for everyone and I travel with people I love too, especially my daughter. But if you haven’t tried it, even once... I’d quietly encourage you to consider it.

Every outfit needs a pop ... A detail that says y Every outfit needs a pop ...

A detail that says you meant it.

Sometimes, mine is simply a silk pocket square.
This one I’ve had for years ... I pinched from my ex-husband’s collection. He got to keep the tie.

A small thing.
But the right small thing changes everything.

The “it” bag. I don’t chase it anymore ... I have The “it” bag. I don’t chase it anymore ...

I have been wearing @tim_oconnor_design for many years now. His suits and silk shirts take up a very happy corner of my wardrobe and I make no apologies for that.

But the clothing is only part of the story.

The accessories you see here are beloved pieces, collected over many years, back when luxury actually felt like luxury.
I don’t chase the “it” bag anymore. I don’t desire to.

I’m not the greatest fan of ageing but there are some genuine benefits ... the wisdom to stop buying so much stuff and the satisfaction of bucking the crazy consumer machine.

When something new comes into my wardrobe, it only earns its place if it works with what I already have ... never the other way around.

Somewhere along the way I stopped collecting things and started creating a wardrobe that is personal and quietly tells my story.

I suspect those of us in the 50+ and 60+ club have quietly become the shrewdest shoppers of all.
We know what works, we know what lasts and we’ve long stopped being seduced by what’s simply new.

There are evenings when I reach for a dress and evenings when I reach for this ... a tuxedo designed by @daniellearmontcouture, worn with a silk blouse and embroidered loafers. I can’t ever see me tiring of a strong silhouette and a delicate detail as a combination.

Women have been wearing the tuxedo since Yves Saint Laurent introduced Le Smoking in 1966.
It caused a scandal... isn’t that wonderful?!
And can you believe women were turned away from restaurants for wearing it?!

Sixty years later it remains one of the most quietly powerful, and yes, sexy things a woman can put on.
