Women apologise far too much ... For taking up sp Women apologise far too much ...

For taking up space.
For having an opinion.
For asking a question, changing their mind, or simply existing with confidence in a room.

I know because I did it too.
Sorry to interrupt. Sorry to bother you. Sorry, could I just. Sorry, I might be wrong but.

At some point I started noticing how often that word appeared before I had even finished a thought. And how rarely it needed to be there.

An apology has real value. It matters when something genuinely warrants one. But when it becomes a reflex, a way of shrinking before anyone asks you to, it stops being polite and starts being a habit worth breaking.

You are allowed to take up space. To have an opinion, ask for what you need, say no without a lengthy explanation and hold your standards without apology.

None of that requires sorry.

A Golden Eagle required the appropriate attire ... A Golden Eagle required the appropriate attire ...

Ella and I couldn’t resist this little piece of theatre at Shymbulak, just 30 minutes from Almaty, Kazakhstan’s cultural and original capital. The traditional costume, the grand mountains, a majestic bird... just a taste of what we’re about to experience.

This is also the country my mother was born in.
Every part of this trip feels like walking a little closer to her.

If you’ve ever felt intimidated by orange, you’re If you’ve ever felt intimidated by orange, you’re not alone ... but you might be missing out. 🧡

Orange is one of the most psychologically powerful colours you can wear.

Associated with warmth, optimism, confidence and creativity, it’s a colour that naturally attracts attention without feeling intimidating. While black can communicate sophistication and authority, orange brings energy, approachability and a sense of joy.

As a stylist, I’ve often found that women who shy away from colour are surprised by how transformative it can be. A vibrant shade doesn’t just change how others see you ... it can change how you see yourself.

You don’t have to wear orange from head to toe. Sometimes a dress, a scarf, a handbag, or even a small pop of colour is enough to brighten both your outfit and your mood.

Fashion should never be about disappearing into the background. It should be about expressing who you are.

Would you wear orange? 🧡

White tee and a denim jacket ... I’ve been wearing White tee and a denim jacket ...
I’ve been wearing this combination for decades and I can’t see that changing.

But what has changed is my attitude and how I discover things and pop them on without overthinking it.
It started with sunglasses. Different shapes, sizes, colours until I felt I’d nailed it. Then my restless eye turned to accessories. Earrings, brooches, rings... anything that makes me stop and say WOW, yes, that’s me.
In my twenties the accessories were minimal, partly because I couldn’t afford better. In my thirties they were trying too hard. In my forties they were finally making sense. And now? They’re really, unapologetically me.

I’m genuinely loving my maturing taste and fashion sense.
Are you finding the same? 🤍

Men are wonderful ... They are also, on occasion, Men are wonderful ... They are also, on occasion, completely exhausting.

I say this with experience. Quite a lot of it, actually. Some of my relationships were short, some lasted a reasonable length of time and one marriage ran for 23 years before it didn’t. I also have a number of male friends I interrogate regularly when I need a male perspective on things.
They have learned to answer carefully.

So consider this less of an opinion and more of a field report.

Here are a few things I have noticed along the way ...

They rarely ask for directions. In a car or in life. This has not changed.

They can compartmentalise in a way that is genuinely impressive and occasionally maddening. The ability to watch television or read a newspaper, while the world is on fire is a skill I have never mastered.

They need to feel useful. Give them a problem to solve and they are happy. Ask them to simply listen without solving anything and you may need to explain that concept more than once.

They say less than they mean and mean more than they say.
Learning to read the gap between the two is an art form.

And finally ...
Despite all of the above, and I cannot fully explain this, we are still attracted to them.
Most of the time.

My advice?
Stay curious, keep your sense of humour and never give up your wardrobe space without serious negotiation.

Silk and sneakers look even better on a woman as s Silk and sneakers look even better on a woman as she matures ...

I’ve been thinking about why that is.

Partly it’s contrast. Silk carries a quiet luxury, something considered and deliberate.
Sneakers, on the other hand, carry ease, movement and a refusal to take the whole thing too seriously.
Together they create something neither could manage alone.
Elegance with an exit strategy, if you like.

But mostly I think it comes down to this. A younger woman wearing silk and sneakers is experimenting.... don’t you think?
A woman who has been dressing for decades and chooses this combination knows exactly what she is doing. You can’t convince me otherwise.

That knowledge is what you’re actually seeing when you look at her.
Confidence has a texture and this is one of them.

I was told not to cross my legs ... so I looked in I was told not to cross my legs ... so I looked into it ...

Turns out the concerns are largely overblown.
Yes, crossing at the knee causes a slight, temporary rise in blood pressure, which is why your nurse always asks you to uncross before she takes a reading. But there is no evidence it causes lasting harm if you’re not sitting that way for hours on end.

What no one mentions is that it can look incredibly elegant when done well. And elegance, in my experience, is worth a little investigation.

The key is simply not to stay in any one position for too long. Vary it, move, uncross occasionally. Your circulation will thank you and so will your posture.

As for the skirt length concern. A mini skirt or anything above the knee, perhaps not ideal. But below the knee with the occasional glimpse of thigh? Well. Life is short. A little mystery never hurt anyone.

Your outfit isn't giving you confidence. It's refl Your outfit isn't giving you confidence. It's reflecting it ...

That’s the difference and it matters.

I’ve watched women walk by and thought to myself, how fabulous she looks. And yet she doesn’t seem to notice it at all. It’s as if the decision of what to wear was made and forgotten the moment she left the house. She was already onto the next thing.

That ease is what people actually notice.
Dressing well is a habit, not a performance. And like any habit, the more you trust it, the less you think about it. Which is exactly when it starts to work.

It comes down to two things really ...

Edit your wardrobe until only the pieces you genuinely love and that fit you with ease remain.
Then make one quiet rule - nothing new comes in unless it meets the same standard.

It sounds simple ... and changes everything.

Leather suit and accessories have been in my wardrobe for years.

I know silk. Here's what I know ... After decades I know silk. Here's what I know ...

After decades of wearing silk — and building a wardrobe where most of my shirts and blouses are silk — I’m declaring myself an experienced (dare I say) silk expert.

Not all silk is created equal.

Chiffon is sheer and flowing. Charmeuse is glossy with beautiful drape. Crepe de chine is matte with texture. Satin weave is lustrous and smooth. Raw silk is slubby, textured and naturally irregular.

Weight matters too. Silk is measured in momme (mm) — think of it like thread count for sheets.

12-19mm: scarves and delicate blouses
19-22mm: the everyday silk shirt sweet spot
25-30mm: tailored pieces and trousers

And after years of trial and error, I’ve learned this: not all silk wears the same.

Some silk pieces can be worn all day and still look fresh. Others crease the moment you sit down.

That’s grade and weave.

Higher-grade silk, like 6A pure mulberry silk, has longer, finer fibres that resist wrinkling and hold their shape beautifully. Lower grades crease easily and lose their lustre faster.

Quality varies greatly, especially now that “silk” can mean wild tussah, blended synthetics, or pure mulberry silk.

For me, 6A mulberry silk is the gold standard: stronger, smoother, naturally hypoallergenic and worth the investment.

A few labels that have consistently delivered beautiful silk shirts over the years: @pierrelouismascia @etro @daisysilk.official @burberry @hermes.

The takeaway? Look for 19mm+ for shirts, ask about the type, and feel the weight in your hands.

Quality silk gets better with age — softer, more beautiful, more yours.
